NBS Leveling Up Education

Leveling Up Education & Healthcare Experiences with Esports

Tech-infused experiences and virtual gaming have been gaining popularity, most notably in schools, but are now being incorporated into healthcare facilities and corporate offices as well. Esports, video games played in an organized and competitive environment, sharpen skills like creative strategizing, problem solving, communication, collaboration and teamwork. Esports can also improve wellbeing, increase happiness, and provide participants with a unique sense of belonging and connection.

NBS recognizes the positive impact video games can have, which is why we were excited to sponsor a “GO Kart” through Gamers Outreach at Corewell Health Beaumont Hospital in Troy, MI. This portable video game kiosk, built specifically for hospitals, was deployed to pediatric patients to bring joy, entertainment and a sense of normalcy to their day, as they play their favorite games from their hospital rooms or common areas.

“GO Karts bring so much happiness to our patients. Being stuck in a hospital room can be long and boring, but these carts give patients something to look forward to and help make the hospital stays more enjoyable,” explained Bridget Poley, Clinical Nurse Manager at Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital. “We are grateful for NBS’s generosity and for helping the hospital provide some fun to these patients during their stays.”

These carts can boost a patient’s mental health by reducing stress, anxiety and feelings of isolation, while also helping with physical health and healing by distracting them from painful treatments and uncomfortable therapies. During hospitalization, children can lose access to friends, school and activities, but by providing an escape to these digital playgrounds, kids can explore different worlds, connect with others and express creativity, despite the health challenges they are facing.

“NBS’s donation is making a difference by providing 2,900 gaming experiences for children each year. All the while helping to further our mission to help foster a sense of joy and normalcy for hospitalized kids,” stated Melissa Sheppard, Sr. Business Development Manager at Gamers Outreach. “We are honored to work closely with NBS and hospitals such as Corewell Health Children’s to help enhance the patient experience.”

Gamers Outreach and their GO Kart program is a great example of how esports are being incorporated into healthcare facilities, but how are we seeing it in education?

Esports opportunities and designated spaces where esports athletes thrive have been popping up in both higher education and K-12 schools. As with any sport, schools embracing esports can help them attract and retain students they may not have gotten otherwise. On-campus gaming opportunities can engage students who might not be interested in other types of extracurricular activities, helping them meet like-minded peers and build strong personal connections.

According to Steelcase research, esports spaces need to be designed with a focus on enhancing gamer performance, supporting gamer wellbeing, facilitating teamwork, and building community between gamers and spectators. This calls for a space with the right layout, furniture, technology and lighting, which is where NBS comes into play! We are here to simplify the process for our clients and work closely together to create the most impactful spaces that allow for a positive gaming experience for both gamers and spectators.

NBS has partnered on several esports projects. Drawing from our expertise and Steelcase research, each space was designed to meet the needs of students while infusing esports design principles. Click here to learn how NBS helped enrich the gaming experience at Rossford Schools.
