Where Life Sciences Innovation Meets Sustainability
When global life sciences leader Sartorius set out to consolidate its Ann Arbor operations into a single, dynamic facility, the goal was clear: create a modern, sustainable space that unites core teams and fuels continued innovation in biopharmaceutical research and development. The new Center of Excellence for bioanalytics is built for collaboration and engagement, anchored by a striking customer experience center and flexible workspaces.
Working in partnership with Hobbs+Black Architects who designed the space and general contractor J.S. Vig, NBS provided the furnishings and specified hard tile flooring. Bringing together a diverse group of people and disciplines from previously separate locations required a space that could accommodate a wide range of work styles. To meet these needs, we furnished a variety of spaces from workstations and private offices to collaborative zones, breakrooms, and reception areas. A highlight of the space is the Customer Interaction Center, a museum-like environment where clients can see Sartorius’ technologies in action.
“Working on this project felt very aligned with the client’s vision — bringing innovation and collaboration under one roof,” explained Ryan Wrigley, IIDA, Vice President, Director of Interior Design at Hobbs+Black. “The way our team came together across disciplines really reflected what the new space was designed to achieve.”
NBS ensured every solution aligned with Sartorius’ global standards and branding while also supporting ergonomics and sustainability. Each area is designed for long-term comfort and adaptability, enabling smooth transitions between focused and collaborative work. Ergonomic furniture and varied seating options support movement and different postures throughout the day.
A modern neutral palette creates a clean, professional aesthetic, while stunning light fixtures and a bold pop of yellow energize the space and reflect Sartorius’ brand identity. Sustainability was a key focus, with the facility designed and furnished using environmentally responsible materials to support Sartorius in its pursuit of LEED Gold certification.
The result is a sleek, modern space that promotes teamwork, connection, and employee wellbeing. Through thoughtful furniture solutions, NBS helped create a flexible, future-ready workspace that aligns with Sartorius’ global vision and enhances the daily experience for its people. With room to grow and a space designed for progress, the Sartorius Center of Excellence is built to drive the next wave of life sciences innovation.
